Many salons have started using sulfate free shampoos and conditioners for hair treatments. Although this doesn’t mean much for the general population who does not care for the specific benefits of this, it is important that we understand why sulfate free shampoos are better than the one we are using right now. sodium lauryl sulfate free shampoo (SLS) and Sodium Laurethe Sulfate are ingredients used in any soap product, including face washes and dish wash soaps. These ingredients are also used in shampoos and conditioner in diluted or mild quantities. However, no matter the quantity, the presence of sulfate in shampoo can have detrimental effects on the quality of hair.

While cleansing the hair of dirt and dust, SLS also strips off the naturally existing oils from the hair. This leads to loss of moisture from the hair and in turn, causes dryness and weak hair. Sulfate is also found to damage hair follicles. Once the follicles are damaged, the hair becomes weak, lusterless and stops growing much. All of these effects cause immense distress to the individual experiencing it. Moreover, for those who have naturally curly hair, their hair is already a little drier than normal. Thus, if normal shampoos, which contain sulfate, are used with curly hair, it leaves behind even more damage to the texture of the hair. For those who have color dyed their hair, sulfate strip off the pigmentation from the hair, leading to loss of color earlier than usual. Sulfate free shampoos and conditioners helps in:

  • Retaining the moisture in the hair.
  • Retain hair’s natural oils.
  • Prevent the scalp from absorbing harmful chemicals.
  • Keep the scalp from itching and burning.
  • Retains the color dye of the hair for a longer period of time.

It is, therefore, advisable to use sulfate free shampoo in daily life for everyone. However, it is also important to note that different people have different hair types, and that different hair types have different requirements. Like people with curly hair need sulfate free conditioner for curls, people with colored hair would need a sulfate free shampoo for protecting against the fading of the color. We understand that summer is here and it is the time of the year to experiment with new hairstyles and dyes. However, with summer also comes extreme heat, perspiration, pollution and dust. All of these factors can harm the quality and texture of hair, leaving you unhappy about your look. So switch from using your regular shampoo and opt for something sulfate free to see a dramatic change in your hair. It is believed that sulfate free shampoo won’t clean the hair completely and won’t form lather at all. But trust us, lather is no guarantee for clean hair and since your regular shampoo is doing you no good, switching to sulfate free shampoo will only benefit you in the best possible way. So this summer, pamper yourself to some relaxing hair spas and head baths, but this time around, use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. Never ignore sulfate free conditioners in the process because it is the conditioners too which contribute towards beautiful, luscious and healthy hairs.
